How It Works

How Triple Glazed Windows Work

Where double glazing has one cavity between two panes of glass, triple glazing creates two separate insulating cavities between three panes. Each cavity is sealed and filled with argon gas — an inert gas that is 34% less thermally conductive than air — effectively doubling the insulation layer compared to double glazing.

Both cavities use Low-E glass coatings that reflect infrared heat back toward its source, working in concert with the argon cavities to minimise total heat transfer in both directions. The result is a U-value that approaches what is achievable in high-performance insulated wall construction — remarkable for a transparent building element.

Single U-Value ~5.8

Is Triple Glazing Right for You?

When to Choose Triple Glazing Over Double Glazing

Double glazing is the right choice for most Melbourne homes. Triple glazing is the right choice when you need the maximum.

Choose Triple Glazing If…

You live in a cold climate zone

Ballarat, Bendigo, Dandenong Ranges, alpine areas, or any location with extended cold winters benefit most from triple glazing's additional thermal mass.

Your home is near significant noise

Homes within 500m of arterial roads, tram lines, rail corridors or under flight paths will benefit from the additional 15-25dB reduction triple glazing provides over double.

You are building to passive house standard

Passive house certification requires window U-values often below 1.0 W/m²K. Triple glazed configurations can achieve this, where double glazing typically cannot.

You want 7-star NatHERS or above

For projects targeting maximum energy star ratings, triple glazing in key orientations can make a significant contribution to the overall thermal performance score.

Maximum comfort is the priority

Some homeowners simply want the best available, regardless of payback period. Triple glazing eliminates cold spots near windows entirely.

Double Glazing May Be Sufficient If…

Your home is in inner or coastal Melbourne

Melbourne's coastal and inner suburbs rarely experience the prolonged cold that makes triple glazing most cost-effective.

Your budget is a primary consideration

Double glazing delivers 80-90% of triple glazing's performance at a lower price point, making it the better value choice for standard projects.

You are retrofitting an existing home

Double glazing is generally the most practical and cost-effective upgrade for existing Melbourne homes replacing single-glazed aluminium windows.

Your noise exposure is moderate

For homes not immediately adjacent to major noise sources, double glazing typically provides sufficient acoustic attenuation.

Benefits

Benefits of Triple Glazed Windows

Unparalleled Thermal Insulation

Triple glazing virtually eliminates heat transfer through the window, maintaining consistent indoor temperatures regardless of weather extremes outside.

Maximum Noise Reduction

Up to 60dB STC noise reduction — the highest achievable in uPVC window construction. Transforms the acoustic environment of homes near busy roads, trains or airports.

Near-Zero Condensation

The interior glass surface stays so close to room temperature that condensation is essentially impossible, even in the most severe Melbourne winter conditions.

Passive House Compatible

Achievable U-values below 1.0 W/m²K make triple glazed windows a key component in passive house and ultra-low-energy building projects.

Enhanced Security

Three panes of glass are significantly harder to break through than two, adding a meaningful physical security benefit in addition to the glazing performance.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

Lower heating and cooling energy use translates directly into reduced greenhouse gas emissions — the most sustainable window choice available for Australian homes.

FAQ

Triple Glazed Windows — Common Questions

What is the difference between double and triple glazed windows?
Double glazed windows use two panes of glass with one argon gas-filled cavity. Triple glazed windows add a third pane and second cavity, increasing the layers of insulation. The result is approximately 30-50% better thermal performance over double glazing, making triple glazing the best choice for cold climates, passive house construction, or homes with significant noise exposure.
Is triple glazing worth it in Melbourne?
For most Melbourne homes, double glazing delivers excellent results and the best return on investment. Triple glazing is particularly worthwhile for: homes in colder areas (Ballarat, Dandenong Ranges, alpine zones), passive house or 7-star energy rating projects, properties near busy roads, train lines or the airport, and homes where maximum comfort is the priority regardless of cost difference.
How much heavier are triple glazed windows compared to double?
Triple glazed units are approximately 50% heavier than equivalent double glazed units. Novalite accounts for this in the frame design, using steel-reinforced uPVC profiles and appropriately specified hardware to ensure smooth operation and long-term durability. Weight is not a performance concern with properly engineered frames.
Can triple glazed windows help with passive house certification?
Yes. Triple glazed uPVC windows are a key component in passive house design, helping achieve the very low U-values required for certification. Novalite can supply triple glazed windows with U-values suitable for passive house projects. We recommend discussing your specific performance targets with our team so we can specify the correct glazing, cavity depth and Low-E coating configuration.
Do triple glazed windows reduce noise more than double glazed?
Yes, significantly. Double glazed windows typically provide noise reduction in the range of 30-38dB STC. Triple glazed windows can achieve 40-60dB STC, making them substantially better for homes near sources of significant noise. The additional glass pane breaks up sound waves differently at different frequencies, reducing the chance of resonance that can reduce performance in double glazing.
Are Novalite triple glazed windows made in Australia?
Yes. Every Novalite triple glazed window is manufactured at our Carrum Downs factory in Melbourne. We do not import finished units — we assemble the triple glazed unit and weld the uPVC frame on-site. This allows us to offer custom sizing and factory direct pricing on even our premium triple glazed range.
