Tilt & Turn — Europe’s Most Versatile Window

The tilt-and-turn mechanism is what defines European window design. A single window sash, operated by one handle, provides two completely different opening modes without compromise. This is why tilt-and-turn windows now dominate European residential construction and are rapidly gaining popularity across Australia.

Turn position (90°)

The sash swings fully inward on vertical hinges, like a door. Maximum ventilation, full access to the glass exterior for easy cleaning from inside.

Tilt position (180°)

The top of the sash tilts inward, creating a ventilation gap at the top of the window. Rain cannot enter. The gap cannot be accessed from outside. Safe to leave overnight or in light rain.

Closed position (0°)

Multi-point locks engage 3-7 points around the frame perimeter simultaneously. The window is sealed with dual perimeter gaskets, eliminating draughts and providing excellent acoustic isolation.

The Upgrade

European uPVC vs Standard Australian Aluminium Windows

Most Australian homes still use aluminium-framed single or double glazed windows. The performance gap compared to European uPVC is significant.

Feature European uPVC (Novalite) Standard Aluminium
Frame material Multi-chamber uPVC — low conductivity Aluminium — high conductivity
Thermal bridging None — multi-chamber eliminates cold spots Severe — conducts heat directly
U-Value (frame) From 1.1 W/m²K From 5.8 W/m²K (10x worse)
Locking mechanism Multi-point — 3-7 lock points perimeter Single-point — one lock per sash
Opening operation Tilt & turn — two modes one handle Sliding or single-swing only
Condensation None — warm interior glass surface Common — cold frame causes condensation
Noise reduction Up to 38dB STC (double glazed) 20-25dB STC (standard double)
Maintenance None — wipe clean only Periodic lubrication, track cleaning
Weathering Resistant — UV stable, no corrosion Susceptible — coastal corrosion risk
Bushfire rating Available BAL 12.5 to BAL 29 Limited options, expensive
The Novalite Advantage

European Performance, Australian Manufacturing

Other suppliers of European-style windows import finished product from Germany or Poland, adding import costs, lead times and markup. Novalite is different.

Melbourne factory

Every window manufactured in Carrum Downs. No shipping containers, no import delays, no currency risk passed to you.

Factory direct pricing

You buy directly from the manufacturer. No distributor margin, no importer markup. The lowest possible price for European-performance windows.

Custom sizing

Because we manufacture locally, any size is possible. Heritage openings, curved tops, corner windows — all achievable without importing special orders.

BAL bushfire rated

Our European-standard windows can be specified with BAL-rated glass and hardware. Very few European importers can offer this for the Australian market.

Australian compliance

Manufactured to both European EN standards and relevant Australian Standards. Suitable for compliance with the National Construction Code and state planning requirements.

Local warranty support

All warranty claims handled directly with our Melbourne team. No sending windows back to Germany. Faster resolution, simpler process.

FAQ

European uPVC Windows — Common Questions

What makes a window "European standard"?
European standard uPVC windows are engineered and tested to comply with European EN standards including EN 12207 (air permeability), EN 12208 (water tightness), EN 12210 (wind resistance) and EN 14351 (product standard). These are significantly more demanding than typical Australian specifications and cover the complete performance of the window as a system — frame, glass, hardware and seals together. European standard windows also typically use multi-point locking and quality-certified hardware.
What is a tilt and turn window?
Tilt and turn is a European window operating system that allows a single sash to open in two ways from one handle position. Turning the handle to 90 degrees opens the window fully inward like a door, providing maximum ventilation and easy cleaning of the exterior glass. Turning the handle to 180 degrees tilts the top of the sash inward, creating a secure background ventilation gap at the top that prevents rain entry and cannot be easily accessed from outside.
Are European uPVC windows better than Australian aluminium windows?
In thermal performance, acoustic performance, security and durability, European-engineered uPVC windows significantly outperform standard Australian aluminium windows. Aluminium is highly thermally conductive, creating cold bridges that transfer heat directly through the frame. European uPVC frames use multiple internal chambers and thermal breaks to achieve near-zero thermal conductivity. Multi-point locking provides superior security to the single-point systems common on aluminium windows.
Does Novalite manufacture European style windows in Australia?
Yes. Unlike competitors who import finished European windows, Novalite manufactures European-standard uPVC windows at our Carrum Downs factory in Melbourne. We use European-engineered multi-chamber profiles and German hardware, but every frame is welded and assembled locally. This gives you European performance with Australian manufacturing — faster lead times, custom sizing and factory direct pricing.
What is the difference between tilt and turn and tilt and slide?
Tilt and turn windows open by swinging the sash inward on vertical hinges (like a door) or tilting it from the top. Tilt and slide doors slide horizontally as the primary operation (like a standard patio door) but also tilt from the top for secure background ventilation without fully opening. Tilt and slide is particularly popular for large door openings where a full inward swing would be impractical.
Do European uPVC windows need fly screens?
European tilt and turn windows can be fitted with pleated fly screens that retract into the frame when not in use, or separate fixed insect screens. The tilt position of tilt and turn windows provides ventilation with the window only partially open, which reduces but does not eliminate insect entry. We recommend discussing fly screen options for windows in areas with significant insect activity.
